To reach and sustain a prominent position in the list of developed nations in all parts of the world there is a growing interest in social entrepreneurship, social enterprises and social innovation. Traditional welfare systems are transforming and new global challenges induce us to 'think out of the box' to solve persistent challenges and problems. Social entrepreneurs create innovative solutions to societal problems, often across sectors and professional disciplines. To do so requires a new set of skills that span knowledge about leadership, organization and management as well as the processes of social innovation in diverse institutional, organizational and cultural contexts.
University of Engineering and Technology Taxila has innovative minds, adequate resources and aim to embed the concept and practice of social entrepreneurship in the minds of its students. Based on huge potential of UET Taxila, the university felt the need and has launched the center for social entrepreneurship to improve the quality of life of community by nurturing this trend into students i.e. upcoming builders of a strong and developed nation.
Social Entrepreneurship
It is Process of creating value by bringing together a unique package of resources to exploit an opportunity, in pursuit of high social returns. It is the attempt to draw upon business techniques to find solutions to social problems. This concept may be applied to a variety of organizations with different sizes, aims, and beliefs.
Conventional entrepreneurs typically measure performance in profit and return, but social entrepreneurs also take into account a positive return to society. Social entrepreneurship typically attempts to further broad social, cultural, and environmental goals often associated with the voluntary sector. At times, profit also may be a consideration for certain companies or other social enterprises.
Three characteristics of Social Entrepreneurship
• Social entrepreneurship meets needs unmet by commercial markets and (usually) the government
• Social entrepreneurship is motivated by social benefit
• Successful social entrepreneurship usually works with, not against, markets
